Associate Laureate (Rising Star)

Highways UK is seeking mid-career professionals who have already shown the qualities that mark them as future leaders in the highways sector. Applicants should demonstrate the following:

1. Industry Expertise

  • A proven track record of technical knowledge and professional competence in the highways sector.
  • Evidence of successful delivery of projects, initiatives, or strategies that have had a meaningful impact.

2. Passion and Commitment

  • A clear passion for the industry, shown through consistent dedication and innovative thinking.
  • Willingness to go beyond the requirements of their role to drive positive change.

3. Communication and Influence

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to engage and inspire colleagues, stakeholders, and the wider industry.
  • Evidence of influencing decision-making, improving collaboration, or raising the profile of the sector.

4. Contribution to the Sector

  • Engagement in industry initiatives, working groups, or mentorship programmes.
  • Active participation in efforts to  improve diversity, sustainability, or innovation within the sector.

Please submit the nominee’s name, job title, and a statement of no more than 750 words explaining why you believe they deserve to be recognised as a Highways UK Laureate or Associate Laureate. Please include specific examples and measurable outcomes to support your submission. Please also include up to three pieces of supporting evidence, as required.

Please note: The submission will be read out when the award is presented, preferably by the nominator.

Laureate (Lifetime Achievement)

The Laureates will recognise individuals who have dedicated their career to the highways sector, inspired and motivated others, and left a lasting legacy within their organisation and the wider industry. Previous winners have included Ginny Clarke OBE, Meera Naran MBE and Martin Tugwell.

Nominees should demonstrate the following:

1. Career-Long Dedication

  • A lifelong commitment to the highways sector, with a sustained record of achievement.
  • Evidence of significant contributions that have shaped the industry.

2. Inspiration and Leadership

  • A track record of motivating and influencing others within the sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by example and support the development of others.

3. Lasting Impact

  • A legacy of positive change within their organisation or the industry as a whole.
  • Evidence of initiatives, policies, or projects that will continue to have a meaningful impact.

Please submit the nominee’s name, job title, and a statement of no more than 750 words explaining why you believe they deserve to be recognised as a Highways UK Laureate or Associate Laureate. Please include specific examples and measurable outcomes to support your submission. Please also include up to three pieces of supporting evidence, as required.

Collaborative Partnership Award

The Collaborative Partnership Award recognises the importance of strong relationships and effective collaboration within and across the highways sector to successfully deliver projects. This category is open to contractors, local authorities, and national authorities who have worked together to deliver a project that demonstrates clear and measurable benefits.

The entry must highlight how the organisations involved have:

  • Overcome challenges through effective collaboration.
  • Delivered tangible benefits and positive outcomes.
  • Developed a project or initiative that is practical and suitable for replication across the sector.

The project(s) should have been undertaken after 1st January 2024

  • Vision: Describe the vision behind the project/initiative/product and what prompted its implementation.

Innovation Award

The Innovation Award recognises a project undertaken by an organisation or local authority that has made or is making a significant improvement to the highways industry. This could be through the implementation of a new method, software, product, idea, or partnership that has positively enhanced a project. The project must have been undertaken after 1st January 2024. Entries should clearly demonstrate tangible benefits and reflect the definition of ‘innovation’ .

Your summary should cover the following points:

  • Vision: Describe the vision behind the project/initiative/product and what prompted its implementation.

  • Challenges: Explain how your initiative addresses the challenges facing the sector.
  • Next Steps: Outline any future plans and how you will ensure the project continues to deliver sustainable benefits.

Net Zero Award

The Net Zero Award recognises a project undertaken by an organisation, highway authority, or partnership that demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. The project should contribute to improving sustainability in the highway environment, including but not limited to:

  • Carbon footprint reduction
  • Local environmental benefits
  • Use of sustainable materials

The project must have been undertaken after 1st January 2024 and should clearly demonstrate its tangible sustainable benefits.

Your summary should cover the following points:

Road Safety Award (NEW)

The Road Safety Award recognises a project undertaken by an organisation, highway authority, or partnership that has demonstrably improved the safety of road users. Eligible projects could involve new enforcement technology, driver education and training, or design and engineering improvements that contribute to casualty and accident reduction.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The project must have been undertaken after 1st January 2024.
  • Entries should demonstrate measurable benefits, practicality, and suitability for replication in other contexts.

Social Value Award

The Social Value Award in the highways sector is awarded to a project undertaken by an organisation, highway authority or partnership that can demonstrate how they’ve embedded social value into their business culture via processes, systems and employees. The project should fundamentally ensure the needs of customers & communities are being met.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The project must have been undertaken after 1st January 2024.
  • The entry should clearly demonstrate the project’s tangible benefits, supported by evidence.

To complete the online entry form, you will need to provide the following:

1. Project Details

  • Name of the project, product, or service you are entering.

2. Project Summary (Maximum 750 words), covering the following points:

  • Vision and Implementation: Describe the vision behind the project/initiative/product. What prompted its implementation?
  • Quantitative & Qualitative Benefits: Outline what has been achieved to date, including measurable outcomes and social value impacts.
  • Challenges and Solutions: Explain how the initiative overcomes the challenges facing the sector.
  • Next Steps: Detail your future plans and how you will ensure that the benefits continue to make an impact.

Team of the Year

The Team of the Year award recognises exemplary best practice, outstanding customer service, and a record of completed projects rooted in excellence, innovation, and safety. The award is open to both public and private sector teams.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The project(s) should have been undertaken after 1st January 2024.
  • The project(s) should demonstrate: Beneficial impact – measurable positive outcomes. Practicality and implementation – evidence that the project is feasible and replicable.

This entry can be submitted by the company itself or by a third party. Entries should include details of completed works, testimonials from clients and customers, and a summary of what sets the team apart from similar organisations.
